Is it true that cysts are formed in each menstrual cycle?
Yes, you need to know that cysts are formed during your monthly menstrual cycle also.
These are called Functional Cysts and they are different from cysts caused by cancer. Functional Cysts are a normal event.
During your menstrual cycle, a follicle develops on your ovary at the egg development site. The follicle makes the estrogen hormone, which causes normal changes required for pregnancy.
After the egg matures, it gets released from the follicle- the process is called ovulation. At this point, two cysts may develop:
- Follicular Cyst: The follicle does not break open and so does not release an egg thus the fluid remains in the follicle and a cyst is formed. We call this cyst a follicular cyst.
- Corpus Luteum Cyst: After an egg has isreleased from a follicle the cyst formed is a Corpus Luteum Cyst.
Are ovarian cysts frequent in a certain age group of women?
Yes. Ovarian cysts are more frequent in the years from puberty to menopause.Cysts are less common after menopause. Some studies suggest that it is most common around 15 years of age.
Are cysts caused in women taking fertility drugs?
Fertility drugs often cause multiple follicles development in the ovaries and thus multiple cysts may be formed. However, these cysts most often vanish after the menstrual period, or after a pregnancy.
Are functional Cysts the same as Tumor Cysts or Cysts due to PCOD/PCOS:
No. They are not the same. An expert Gynecologist can diagnose the difference and accordingly may advise you for right course of treatment.
Causes
Most ovarian cysts develop as a result of your menstrual cycle (functional cysts). Other types of cysts are much less common.
Functional cysts
Your ovaries normally grow cyst-like structures called follicles each month. Follicles produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone and release an egg when you ovulate.
Are there Cysts not associated with the function of the menstrual cycle?
Yes and most of the time these cysts are the cause of concern. A few such cysts are as below:
- Cystadenomas: Developed on the surface of the ovary, they might be filled with mucous or watery material.
- Dermoid cysts or Teratomas: They can contain tissue may be hair or skin because they form from embryonic cells. They’re rarely cancerous.
- Endometriomas: If uterine endometrial cells grow outside your uterus (endometriosis), this type of Cyst may develop.
Women should know that Dermoid cysts and cystadenomas/Teratomas can become large, causing the ovary to move out of position. This may even lead to painful twisting of your ovary, which is referred to as ovarian torsion.
Risk factors
Risk factors for Ovarian Cysts are Hormonal Problems, Fertility Treatment, Pregnancy, Endometriosis, Severe Pelvic Infection, and a previous Ovarian Cyst.
Complications
Ovarian Torsion (leading to an abrupt onset of severe pelvic pain, nausea, and vomiting) and Rupture of Cyst are severe complications of Ovarian Cyst.
How to prevent or what to do in case of an Ovarian Cyst?
Clear from the above that you cannot prevent ovarian cysts. However, regular pelvic exams through an expert Gynecologist are required so that we may know changes in your ovaries at the earliest. Changes in your monthly cycle and abnormal menstrual symptoms should not be ignored.
